Haslip Family
HISTORY OF THE HASLIP NAME :
The ancient history of the HASLIP name begins with the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain.
The name is derived from when the family resided in a valley noted for having many hazel trees. It is derived from the Old English word husel and the Old Norse word hesli, which both mean hazel, and from the Old English word hop, which refers to a valley or a hollow between two hills.
Variations of the name include Hazlip, Hazlop, Hislop, Heslep, Haslop, Heslip, Heaslop, Heaslip, Heaslop and many more.
The earliest origins of the Haslip family in England were found in the county of Yorkshire, where John Heslop was recorded as a resident in 1414. Members of the Haslip family migrated north to Scotland, where William Heaslip became a vicar of Cortoquhy in Angus and Stephen Hislop became a minister in Glasgow in 1455. Brances of the family were also found in Cumberland, Edinburgh, and the city of London.
Research into origins of individuals families in North America reveal records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the Haslip name, or a variant : William Heaslip who landed in Virginia in 1638, John Heaslip who landed in Delaware and was a successful farmer in 1798, and Ebenezer Hislop who arrived in Philadelphia in 1844.
