McMullen Family



Michael McMullen

Michael was born between 1793 and 1797 in Rathfriland, County Down, Ireland. In 1812 he enlisted under-age with the 80th Regiment and in 1819 transferred to the 69th Regiment. He served in the East Indies between 1814 and 1824.

In 1848 Michael came to New Zealand on the Fencible Ship "Ann" with his wife Ellen (nee McELVOY or McEVOY) and four daughters. The family settled in Otahuhu township and also had a small farm.

Michael died on 10 April 1859 of pleurisy and enteritis aged 62 years. Ellen died in 1864 at Otahuhu aged 57 years.

Children of Michael and Ellen :

Mary born 1825. She arrived in New Zealand with her family in 1848 on the "Ann". Mary married Henry MITCHELL on 16 July 1848 in Onehunga and they settled in Otahuhu. There were five children, including one son, Henry. Mary died on 20 June 1865 and was buried at the Holy Trinity Cemetery, Otahuhu.

Margaret born 1826. She married George STRONG in July 1848 in Onehunga. George was born in Rotherhithe, England around 1826 and was employed as a sailor on the "Ann".   George died on 27 October 1896 in Auckland.  Margaret died on 21 July 1911 in Auckland.

  • Hellen (Ellen) born 1851 in Auckland.

  • George William born 1853 in Auckland.

  • Charles John born 21 September 1855 in Auckland.

  • Edward born 17 May 1857 in Auckland.

  • Alfred born 1859 in Auckland.

  • John born 1862 and died in 1862 in Auckland.

  • Frederick born 1863 in Auckland.

Rose Anne
born 1832 in Charlemont, Armagh, Ireland.   She married Angelo PARAGEE (PARAGIN) on 4 July 1849 at St Patricks, Auckland and they had two daughters including Susan.    Angelo was a boatman at the time of his marriage and was the son of Joseph PARAGIN and Catherine LANGELKA.  Angelo died in a scrub fire in South Auckland on 29 October 1854.  
On 24 August 1858 Rose Anne married George (Charles) SMITH at Otahuhu.  George was born in Suffolk, England and was the son of Thomas SMITH and Lucy WOODARD.   He was a soldier in the 58th Foot Regiment.   George and Rose Anne had 4 sons and 2 daughters.  George died on 22 September 1910 in Otahuhu.  Rose Anne died on 11 June 1915 also in Otahuhu.

Ellen born about 1843.  She married John COOK around December 1862 at the residence of Henry Mitchell in Otahuhu. John was a shoe-maker and he was aged 30 years at the time of their marriage.


Mary McMullen

Mary was born in 1825. She arrived in New Zealand on the Fencible Ship "Ann" on 16 May 1848.  Shortly after this, on 16 July 1848, Mary married Henry Mitchell at St Johns Chapel, Onehunga.  They settled in Otahuhu and had five children - Sarah born 1849, Margaret born 1851, Betsey born 1852, Henry born 1855, and Mary born 1857.

Mary died on 20 June 1865 and was buried at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Otahuhu.  Henry died on 25 August 1901 also in Otahuhu.
